What’s been going on….

We haven’t posted for a while as we have been so busy this last month and with wedding season now finally here and in full force, we thought we better update before we don’t have time to!

Our latest wedding only last weekend was between Jodie and Adrian and was held on the stunning grounds of the Cruising Yacht Club of SA and what we thought was going to be a rainy day, turned out nice and bright and full of sunshine for us!

The day was full of love, laughter and the mention of Holden and footy multiple times as we had a gorgeous photo shoot on the Semaphore Jetty and on one of the spectacular yachts moored at the Cruising yacht club.

The night was finished with an intimate Father/Daughter dance that brought a tear to your eye and some pretty groovy dance floor moves had by everyone!

Congratulations Jodie and Adrian and we wish you all the best in your future together!

Coming up for us at DianaM Photography, we have our regular gig at the HWY Hotel with our social snaps, our Frocktober Event at the Hwy where they are raising Money for the Ovarian Cancer Council, we also have Engagement Parties, Birthdays and some more weddings  to be captured and from here until the end of December, we are going to be busy little bunnies!

If you have a special event or a wedding which you need our services for, then please contact us to secure your date as they are filling fast!

Nicole + Alex 19.08.17

What a beautiful day it turned out to be for Nicole and Alex’s Day!

Turning up in her dad’s vintage car (the one he arrived in when he got married), Nicole walked up the aisle to meet her soulmate in the surrounds of the ever lovely Gardens of St Francis Winery in Old Reynella SA.

Entering their reception to the Star Wars theme song, the scene was set for an unforgettable night with a beautiful lamington cake and some more theme songs from DJ Thomas McNally getting everyone in the mood to light up the dance floor.

Congratulations Nicole and Alex and we wish you all the best for your wonderful future together!

What a Busy Month! + Some Headshots!

The month of July has been mega busy!

I have finished off a heap of wedding clients photos and been able to present them with their beautiful album!

These albums are made to the finest quality with the binding of the book being stitched and not glued together.

A classy crystal cover finishes this exquisite album off and gives it that touch of elegance!

The look on my clients face when I handed them their wrapped album and they opened it was just divine and it totally makes it worth it. Every single time I do a wedding and my client receives their photos and tells me how happy they are with them, it makes it all worth it!

We also captured some corporate headshots in July for Money Quest in Mclaren Vale!

Annette Tothill and her talented staff were on hand to give us some cracker smiles and Alfie the Team mascot even came for his photo to be taken!

If you did need a Mortgage broker then I would highly recommend Annette and her team!

We have also been steadily booking weddings for 2018 and are really excited to be a part of Love on the lawn Wedding Expo at Morphettville this Oct!

We will be showcasing some of the beautiful weddings we have captured in 2016-2017 and will also have our signature Stainless Steel, Mounted and Acrylic prints on show for you to touch and feel and see the quality for yourselves!

Come down and say hi to the team and you might even get to meet Katie who is doing work experience with us for the last half of 2017.

We look forward to seeing you there!

We will continue to keep you updated with what is happening within DianaM Photography and we look forward to sharing a coffee with you soon!

Backup, Backup, Backup!

How to backup your photos properly and to safe keep them for future generations

.

I always supply my clients, both in the wedding and lifestyle shoots I do, with a USB with all their precious photos on them. I only buy my USB’s from respectable suppliers who individually test them before I use them and transfer the photos over. I want to talk about how you can backup your photos when your receive them and how printing your photos and not just storing them on your computer is essential.

When you receive your USB from me, plug into your computer and COPY the files into a separate folder in your computer. I want to stress to you NOT to cut and and paste your photos from the USB, only COPY them. The reason behind this is, if something goes wrong with the file transfer and you have cut and paste, the files are no longer on your USB and you can lose them entirely if it malfunctions through the transfer process and we don’t want that at all.

Once you have copied a set of the photos onto your computer, make sure you make another copy on an EXTERNAL Hard drive. Why External you say? Well, if your computer was to ever blow up or get stolen and all you had were all your photos on that computer, then they would all be lost. So make sure, you have an external copy of your photos aswell.

When you unplug your device from your computer (whether it be USB or an external Hard drive) always right click on your device on your computer and click EJECT. If you do not eject your device properly and you disconnect your device from your computer, the device can malfunction and you can also lose all of your photos. Please always press EJECT before disconnecting.

So, you now have a copy of your photos on your computer and a copy of your photos on an external hard drive. You are now covered if your computer blows up and your covered  if you lose your USB as they are now safely stored on your computer. So what happens if your house burns down? (not a nice situation, but it can happen!)

Make another copy of your photos (and not the photos just from me) on ANOTHER EXTERNAL hard drive that you can store at your parents house, a friends house or someone you can trust to safe keep your photos. This ensures that if your house does ever burn down, that you have a copy of all of your precious memories that remain undamaged.

As a photographer, it is my duty of care, to have an offsite backup of all of the photos that I supply my clients incase my own house burns down! (knock on wood)

Printing of Photos

We all love having digital images and with the introduction of USB’s and hard drives we think that life is great and our photos are always secure in these tiny pieces of glorious electronic hardware.

That is completely untrue!

USB’s Fail and so do External hard drives. They don’t and will not last forever but a printed photo does (if secured and kept properly)

Always print your photos! Even if it’s a tiny 6×4 inch copy of all of them. At least you will have a hard copy memory of that day that you can hold in your hand and show your children or grandchildren, long after your USB or hard drive has failed and been destroyed.

This is the beauty of prints and this is why I always offer prints with all my packages because at least I am doing a small part in ensuring that my client always has a hard copy memory kept alive on luxe paper.

When storing your printed photos (larger ones over 8 x10) and your storing them in a frame, always ensure that your frame has glass in it. There is a fad going around where you can get glassless frames and really it’s a bad idea because there are 2 things that can go wrong with your photo if it is not behind glass.

  1. Dust can sit on the photo and discolour the ink and will eventually destroy that photo over time
  2. If in direct sunlight during different times of the day, either with light coming in through a window or placed outside, the sunlight will fade and damage the photo a lot quicker than it does when stored safely behind glass.

When receiving your canvas print from me, make sure that again, it is not in direct sunlight and that you always wipe over the canvas with a clean dry cloth once every 2 months, to makee sure that no dust collects on top of the canvas or on the front itself, as we know that dust can damage inks.

Please DO NOT spray your canvas with Hair spray thinking that it will protect the colours and longevity of your print. IT WILL NOT and the chemicals in the hairspray WILL damage your canvas.

I hope that I have helped you in some way with understanding the best way to backup your photos when you receive them from me or any photographer and in worse case scenario, your photographer should keep your photos for a period of up to 5 years both internally and externally so if all else fails, they can resupply your photos for you usually at a cost of just supplying another USB and the time it takes them to find the photos and recopy them.

In real life, we all say we don’t have time to do this or that, but photos are memories and they are your past self. Don’t destruct your past and let those memories vanish.

Backup, Backup, Backup!!

Hwy’s new Native Creative Launch

I was lucky enough to be invited to the launch of the Native Creative menu that the Highway Hotel was promoting for the next 2 weeks only.

Some great food bloggers joined me including representation from Glamm Adelaide, Adelaidian and Feed Me Adelaide.

I was asked to take some photos so the Hwy could use some for their social media and for a taste of this wonderful menu, I was more than happy to oblige!

When I saw the menu, my first reaction was “oh dear, it’s got 2 seafood dishes”….because I don’t eat seafood but I thought I’d be brave and taste them anyway. The highway is renowned for it’s great food, so it couldn’t be that bad!

Dish 1: Moreton Bay Bug Tails with Pickled Riberry, White Carrot and Karkalla

Review

For a non seafood eater, this was tasty!! Loved the texture and it didn’t taste fishy at all! The Karkalla added a nice flavour hit and the sauce was just devine! The white carrots were subtle but cooked to perfection and the Riberries added that nice tartness to balance out the sauce. Overall a score of 10/10 (for a seafood dish)

Dish 2: Seared paroo Kangaroo fillet with Muntries, Beetroot, Barilla Leaves and Puffed Grains.

Review

Again…as I am a boring eater, I haven’t been exposed to kangaroo a lot either and my first thought was… yum..meat..I’ll eat it!

The texture and flavour in that kangaroo was just devine. The chef has cooked it very nicely and there was no toughness in it at all. The smoky flavour hit the tongue like a warm hug and then the beetroot came along and put the cherry on top. It was beautiful and sweet and not tart at all and worked really well with the puffed grains and the slight saltiness of them. The muntries I had never tasted before but they were another nice flavour boost. Lot’s of unique flavours in the one dish! Score 9/10 – Simply because the raw onion was a bit much. Maybe 1 would have been enough.

Dish 3: 500g Thornby Lamb Rump with creamed warrigal greens, saltbush and potato crisp salad

Review

The lamb was cooked perfectly and had little fat. I understand that meat needs some fat to increase the flavour, but this was nice not having too much fat either and allowed your palate to focus on the meat itself more. The Jus was amazing and full of flavour, it was nice and full bodied and worked well with the asparagus. The potato crisps were little morsels of heaven and were nice and crunchy and not overcooked. Now…the saltbush! I could have eaten that all day! My first taste of saltbush ever and it was the most tastiest plant I have ever consumed. I am going to go down to Bunnings and grab myself a pot this week, just so I can grow some so I can eat it! Overall a lovely and well put together dish 10/10 – could not fault one single element in this dish

Dish 4: Robarra Baby Barramundi with native Ficinia Nodosa Bushes, Lemon Myrtle, Samphire and Native Thyme Butter

Review

Unfortunately there was not enough to go around on this dish, so I missed out, which was more than fine as not being a seafood eater, I was more than happy to sit this one out although would have loved to have tasted a potato! The dish itself looked amazing and was so colourful. Very good value for money too as the meat that was coming off the fish looked full and fat with nice white fillets being served. The potatoes and the Thyme butter smelt so good. 8 – 10 – only because I couldn’t taste it so can’t comment fully

Dish 5 – Rosella Sorbet with Poached Quandong, Wattle seed tuile and violet sugar

Review

I love desserts! I have to say…when I saw the sorbet on the menu I knew this was going to be my favourite dish of them all. I could literally live in a dessert cafe somewhere and so this just tempted my tastebuds to no degree! When the dish got served, the first thing I noticed was the colour. It didn’t look like a dish that would be served up in the colder months and reminded me of summer and spring and really looked rather beautiful in all it’s colourful glory. The sorbet was amazing! It was tart, fresh, flavoursome and sweet all at the same time and went off with a big bang! I have never tasted quandongs before and so was a bit hesitant to try them but after a few coaxing words from a friend, I ate one and it tasted to me like a tarty version of an apricot and was not unpleasant at all and rather nice. The wattle seed tuile was to die for and I could have eaten a whole box if given the chance. It was war,, it was wholesome and full of flavour and not gritty at all. Spot On! The violet sugar was another experience I have never had before either and although small was really yummy and wasn’t as sweet as normal sugar, which I thought was rather nice and worked well with the tart of the sorbet. A very nice end to the tasting and left my palate nice and fresh. Score: 10 /10

Overall the 5 dishes were very creative and beautiful and were almost works of art on the plate with the colours and textures displayed.

I can’t believe they are only going to be around for 2 weeks!

Make sure that you get in to taste these wonderful dishes.

If you need any of your food photographed then please CONTACT ME today to book in your date.

Katherine and Andrew 21.04.17

An intimate and Romantic wedding was had by the lovely Katherine and Andrew at the stunning Kingsford Homestead in the Barossa Valley on the 21.04.17

The Bridesmaids and flower girls all wore couture white outfits that complemented the relaxed and fresh vibe of the day and the bride walked the aisle in a stunning pantsuit dress.

The rustic old barn that housed their vows to one another accentuated the love these 2 showcased infront of family and friends.

The open fields, the dusty dirt roads and the famous front door of Kingsford Homestead all played their part in creating a stunning photoshoot as the orange glow of the sunset made the old stonework of the homestead come alive.

Congratulations Katherine and Andrew and may your future shine bright

Kerryn + Reece 08.04.17

Congratulations Kerryn and Reece on becoming Husband and Wife!

The setting for this gorgeous ceremony was located at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Adelaide City.

The church is nestled in amongst some wonderful old trees and inside golden pipe organs witnessed the beautiful marriage of these 2 beautiful souls.

The Bridal party shoot was then creatively shot in amongst Adelaide University, the old Wool Mills at Port Adelaide and then a quick Pit Stop home to have a photo with their Black Labrador Puppy Jetta!

Reception was then Celebrated at Osmond Terrace Function Centre amongst the old wood beams and sparkling Chandeliers.

We wish Kerryn and Reece all the best in their life together and it was great to see such effort and organisation put in by them to create their special day.

Update on past Month – Feb/March 2017

The past Month has been busy with my regular Gig at the Hwy Hotel doing the socials and capturing all the filly’s from the Adelaide Cup yesterday!

Wedding season has truly  kicked in and I have been getting so many enquiries and Bookings for both 2017 and 2018 and I just want to welcome and congratulate all the new Bride’s and Grooms that have booked with me in the past Month! I really look forward to working with you all and can’t wait to capture your special day!

Finally have samples of the gorgeous new albums that I supply my brides and Grooms that book Package 2 and 3 – Half day and Full day and so far the response from my couples has been very good! They love the new Crystal Cover and even the linen cover is getting some wow’s here and there with the quality speaking for itself.

Getting an Album not only ensures that you will always have something physical to look at and touch but it’s also a beautiful keepsake for generations to come and there is no risk of the photos “failing and disappearing” like they can from a USB.

I also have had an influx of Family Bookings for the Month of April/May and look forward to capturing the spirit and love that holds these families together in a natural outdoor setting. Location shoots are always the best and lets the children interact naturally with nature and brings out sneaky smiles and emotions that you would not otherwise get in a studio setting.

I hope that you are all having a wonderful year so far and look forward to sharing many more magical moments with you all in 2017/2018 🙂

Quality over Quantity

What is the difference between Quality and Quantity?

You may think these things go together hand in hand and they can do if reimbursed correctly and delivered honestly.

I get asked all the time by clients making enquiries about the fact I limit my photos in my wedding packages, “why do you do that?”, “Can’t I get them all?”, “Why this number?”, “Is that all you take?”

These questions are asked genuinely from the client due to ignorance of what a Photographer actually does to achieve those 400, 500 or 600 images and how much time goes into delivering between 400 – 600 QUALITY images.

I always give them a run down of my costings and my hourly schedule for editing and that seems to enlighten them and educate them and thus brings about a new appreciation for how much dedication and skill we photographers put into each photo.

Quantity

There has been a trend in the wedding photography market from some amateur photographers to supply ALL images taken on the day. This gives the client the impression that they are getting a QUANTITY of fantastic photos of their wedding day. It gives the client the false belief that every time we photographers click the shutter button, that we are taking a photo that is good enough to give to them.

That is completely wrong. There are a lot of elements that can effect a photo and make it unworthy of producing for the client. Let me list a few things…

Over Exposure, Closed Eyes, People making stupid faces, People being blurry, under exposure, too much reflection of flash in something shiny, people getting in the way of a shot, people not being captured in a flattering stance and just general bad angles.

As the client…do you really want all of those photo? What are you going to do with all those bad ones? Bin them? Hang them up on your wall with the rest? Show them to your family and say “wow…look at this photo…Uncle Barry’s eyes are closed and his tongue is hanging out because he’s mid talking….”

As a photographer…Honestly….I don’t want to give you those photos as you are not going to look at them, use them or showcase them in any way, so my brand and my skill is not going to be showcased or appreciated and only negativity can come from those photos, directed at my business…….because I’m not giving you QUALITY photos.

So…I limit my photos to a certain amount so that you are getting QUALITY photos. Photos that will be a great representation of my skill in editing those photos, my skill in capturing artistic and technically correct shots in camera and also my skill at working with you to create that shot that you are going to hang on your wall and thus making you happy you booked me in the first place.

Quality

To bring you a quality image a photographer must do 3 things.

  1. They must have the right equipment and the correct lighting to handle any situations, including darkened rooms, shadows created by dappled light and bright sunlight, creative rain shots and backlit shots. They must also have the correct lenses to achieve the depth of field they want and the sharpness associated with the photo they are wanting to achieve.
  2. They must capture the photo correctly in camera. They must be able to know their camera, it’s settings, how to expose correctly and change their settings in an instant for spur of the moment shots. It is very hard and sometimes impossible to edit and correct a photos that is overexposed because the photographer did not expose the photo correctly in the camera in the first place. They need to understand shutter speed and what shutter speed to have in certain situations. Blurriness is no substitute for QUALITY images.
  3. They need to have the skill of correctly enhancing the clients photos to a standard where the colours are correct, the exposure is brought into line and the whole feel and look of the photo (whether it be black and white, Sepia or a creative edit) then the photographer must have the skill in their editing software to achieve those looks without just applying a “filter” based on what the client would like achieved. It takes a lot of training in all editing software (I personally use Lightroom and Photoshop together) to be able to truly master all it’s functions and to use the editing software correctly to achieve QUALITY photos. As photographers we either Pay for this training or we don’t and self teach from others or free workshops, online seminars, 1 on 1 training and mentorships. This is an important skill as not 1 Photographer can say that they have taken a photo and NOT edited it in some small way, shape or form either in camera or out of camera. We all have to edit….and it takes time….. which brings me to my next point.

Quality takes time. That is for any industry. A Plumber takes time to do a Quality job, a house builder takes time to do a quality job, a jeweller takes the time to do a quality job….. I take on each photo approx 15 minutes for 500 Photos. That’s 7,500 minutes, that’s 125 hours, that’s 3.2 weeks (calculating 38 hrs in a week). Now, that’s IF I spend 15 minutes on each photo. But there are some that take much longer if we have to take people out, correct the lighting, put something in (like a lost loved one), do a creative edit and sometimes I’ll spend maybe up to 30 Minutes just on 1 photo because….. I want to give my client a QUALITY assured image and not just take them out of the camera and not edit them just to give my client a QUANTITY of images.

I take pride in delivering Quality images to my clients. That is not just in digital form either. It stretches across prints, albums, canvas’s and Printed products. If the Quality is not there in the digital image in the first place, then everything down the line will look crap aswell. The prints will look bad, the canvas colours won’t come up well and I certainly wouldn’t want to look at a 50 page wedding album full of wedding photos where people’s eyes are closed or they have bad positioning. So Quality is a Must!!!

If I was to charge my client for my time editing 2000 photos I would be very unaffordable. Lets just base this on $5 a photo as it takes 15 minutes a photo …for Example…I’m paying myself $20 an hr…. That’s $10,000. PLUS….I then need to charge you for my time on the actual wedding day (which was an all day package and 15 hours) so $20 an hr….. That’s $300…which really…is nothing compared to the photos….. But then I need to cover my costs of the insurance I pay per year for public liability insurance, then I also need to cover the costs of Fuel, food, maintenance on my equipment, the cost of hiring a second shooter (if needed on the day), the training and education I’ve had and am going to have, the electricity and power it takes to run my equipment at home, to cover the editing time I put in on my computer to achieve QUALITY images for my clients wedding.

So that all adds up to well over $10,000….. would you pay $10,000 for your wedding?

…..

To cut a long story short…… Please respect your photographer and the photography industry in general. We are like any other professional in any other job. We have overhead costs, we have a life outside of our photography business and need to eat, sleep and play aswell. My calculations have been based on $20 an hr for a professional service. I know I would like to be paid more than $20 an hr….. So what is the photographer working for per hour that is giving you 2000 photos of your wedding day? I would say less than $5 an hr….. To be honest, I respect myself and my profession much more than that.

QUALITY over QUANTITY is a WIN WIN situation for both the client and the photographer. Lets all respect and help each other grow into better and more successful versions of ourselves.

Just my 2 cents worth – Diana
